Bard Drops Drew 18-0

In an extraordinary display of both forwards and backs play, Bard's defense took center stage in the Red's annual Spring Fling Under the Lights game. Despite being outweighed by at least 300 pounds, the Bard pack out scrummed the Drew Flying Rhinos; winning all of their own put-ins as well as stealing a few key defensive set pieces. Thanks to great offensive rucking, the potential ridden backline finally was unleashed, and Bard scored three tries and a penalty kick, while Drews only scoring opportunities were either squandered or held up in the try zone.

Vets knock Rookies 31-5

In a game of 10's, Bard made the most of a Wagner cancellation to play a muddy and ridiculously fun scrimmage within it's own roster. Those who played less than a year were grouped onto one squad, though they were graced on the field by Coach Doomhammer himself.

Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of accepted students day, the scrimmage went on for two 20 minutes halves, each punctuated by a high level of intensity that Bard hopes to continue through the next week of practice and beyond.

Though all the rookies played well and fought hard, rookie Durante Barringer earned his stripes today by holding the rookie line at prop while also getting some bone-crushing runs in.

Next week Bard plays their big brother club, the Kingston Mad Dogs.

Bard Drops to FDU 36-7

In a game closer than the score suggests, Bard travelled to FDU to take on a team that has improved infinitely since last season. Bard struck first with a converted try but would remain silent for the rest of the game. All of FDU's points (other than an equalizing try in the first half) were scored in the last 20 minutes.

Bard looks to add a win to their schedule when Wagner comes to town this saturday.

Wesleyan Holds Off Bard Fight-Back in "Magnificent 7's" Final

Bard lost 19-14 despite a late game rally in the final match of Saturday's "Magnificent 7's" tournament held on the Seth Goldfine Memorial Rugby Field. Bard's road to the finals first led through the seeding round against the Red Dogs (hybrid Bard/Mad Dogs team), Wesleyan, and West Side RFC.

In the elimination round the Reds scraped past Montclair State, who had just come off of defeating the dreaded Red Dogs, 7-5 with a late desperation try off a kick by always-charming forward Andrew "Frank" Levy in the waning minutes of the 2nd half. Thanks to a conversion by Hamza Hayauddin, Bard had the edge at the final whistle.

The final against Wesleyan started with a quick try by the visitors, putting Bard at a single try deficit. Bard struck back before the half, and tied it up at 7. Wesleyan took advantage of some confusion in the scrum, tacking on an unconverted try. The boys from Connecticut scored again, much to the disappointment of the Bard fans in attendance. Bard wasn't done, however. Using some intelligent offloads, Bard worked it's way to Wesleyan's tryline and added 7 more points through the great effort of Captain Asif Rizvi. It wasn't enough however as the final whistle blew directly afterward and Bard was locked in 2nd place.

The schedule for spring 2011 is here and as follows.

Saturday April 2nd - Bard Hosts the "Magnificent 7's" tournament on the Kline Rugby Field. T-shirts and refreshments will be sold with proceeds going to local charity and the New Rugby Field campaign. Donations also accepted! Enjoy a full day of 7's rugby.

Sunday April 10th - The Reds travel to FDU in our first and only away fixture of the season.

Saturday April 16th - Wagner comes back to Bard to be rocked by the Reds

Saturday April 23rd - The Kingston Mad Dogs come to Bard to challenge us in a full 15's match.

Saturday April 30th - SPRING FLING RUGBY! Saturday night, under the lights, Stevenson Soccer Field, 8 PM, be there.

Friday May 20th - Alumni Game. Come watch our young in-their-prime ruggers beat the tar out of the old timers of yesteryear.

Cianci 7's Tournament

Bard Rugby fielded it's first official sevens team this past Sunday the 14th of November on a brisk yet lovely day in Seekonk, Massachusetts. Waking up at four in the morning (that's right; four in the morning) the Ruggers of Red Hook set off on the three and half hour drive to make their first match at 9:00AM.

The Reds kicked off their tournament campaign with an early match against Nichols College. Unfortunately, the opposition couldn't field their full team until ten minutes after the match was to start, so despite Bard's willingness to wait, the referee declared Nichols' forfeit. We were able to get a seven minute long scrimmage off, however, and we got a lot of our rookies some well-deserved and well-needed playing time. Not the way Bard would like to earn our first "W" of the day, in part because the Nichols players were great guys. We look forward to seeing them in the spring!

Bard's second match was against Roger Williams University. Bard opened up the game with a try by freshman Ian "Little Red" Pelse, putting the score at 5 - 0. Roger Williams answered right back however, this time with adding a go-ahead conversion. 5-7 to RWU. A bit of back and forth play later, RWU tacked on another converted try, but Bard didn't give up. A bit of nifty passing and freshman Ben "Benpowers" Powers made it through the defense to touch the ball down in the try zone, making the score 10-14, and putting the Reds within one score of the lead. Bard parked itself in RWU's half of the field and finally the pressure paid off in a huge break from Senior Hamza "Lavs" Hayauddin, supported by Aaron "Patches" Strauss. He was stopped short of the try line however, and Bard was unable to punch it in. In the final play of the game, a miscue from Bard's offense resulted in a turnover, and an RWU try making the final score a disappointing yet tight 10-19.

The third and final placement match was set at 12:40, meaning the ruggers had some time to nap and make up some of those precious hours of sleep they missed on the ride over. Fully rested and warmed up, Bard took the field to take on Rhode Island College. The first half went better than anyone could have hoped. With Bard putting twenty-four points on the board in six minutes. The second half started off with two quick unconverted tries by the opposition, and an athletically impressive try by dashing and handsome forward Andrew "Frank" Levy that was unfortunately called back on a questionably knock on call. Final score: 24-10 in favor of the Reds.

Our last game came when we were down to no subs due to injuries, and our starters were exhausted and slightly injured themselves, but the Reds took the field anyway, looking forward to a match that they knew would be difficult and almost impossible to win, but a learning experience all the same. Boston College is one of the tops teams in the country, sitting on top of Division 1 in the vaunted New England Rugby Football Union, and a team that Bard College might never get the chance to play ever again. Suffice to say, that they were privileged to get the opportunity. BC took the fight to the beleaguered Bardians immediately, tacking up a score within the first three minutes. Despite fighting a losing battle defensively, Bard put up the only points scored on BC by any team when speedster and dog-lover Hamza "Mauve Lightning" Hayauddin broke through the defense and touched down for a try.

All in all, it was a great day for Bard, finishing fourth out of fourteen in the standings, and a great day for the future of the sevens team.
